Privacy policy

Overview

ShareText ("we", "us") provides a simple way to create and share text links. This policy describes how we handle information when you use the service.

What we collect

• Account data: If you register, we store your name, email, and credentials needed to operate your account (including security features you enable).
• Content you create: Notes you save, share links, optional comments (when enabled), and related metadata needed to run the product (for example expiration, access settings, and view counts).
• Reports: If someone reports a note, we may store the reason, details you provide, and technical metadata such as IP address and browser information to investigate abuse and protect the service.
• Technical logs: Standard server and application logs may include IP addresses, timestamps, and request information for security and reliability.

How we use information

We use the above to provide and secure the service, send transactional email (such as verification or password reset), respond to reports, prevent abuse, and comply with law when required.

Sharing

We do not sell your note content, your form responses or your files, and we never pass them to an advertiser. We use processors (for example email delivery and hosting) as needed to run the site, and the advertising and analytics described below. Content you publish via a share link is available to anyone who has that link (and any password you set).

Cookies and similar storage

Two cookies are set because the site cannot work without them: a session cookie that keeps you signed in and remembers notes you created as a guest, and a CSRF token that stops another site submitting forms as you. Neither is used to track you and neither can be turned off without breaking the site.

Some parts of the site also store small amounts of data in your own browser — a dismissed notice, a preferred theme, text you were part-way through handing from one tool to another. That stays on your device. It is never sent to us and we cannot read it.

Analytics and advertising

Some pages carry advertising, which is what keeps them free. We use Google AdSense for the ads, Google Analytics to count visits, and Google Tag Manager to load both. Those are Google products, and on the pages that carry them Google may set cookies or similar identifiers in your browser.

They are not on every page. There are no ads and no advertising script at all on a page you need an account to reach, on a hosted file or document, on a note that has expired, or on an end-to-end encrypted note. A ShareText Pro subscriber never receives the advertising script on any page, so for them there is nothing to turn off.

In the EU, the UK and Switzerland these are switched off until you agree to them: Google's tags start with advertising and analytics storage denied, and only change if you say so in the consent dialogue. Elsewhere they start on and you can opt out. You can change your answer at any time from the privacy options on any page carrying ads.

What we never do is attach any of this to the content of a note, a form response or a file. The advertising sees the page you are on, not what is written on it.

Retention & deletion

We keep data as long as needed to operate the service and honor note lifetimes (including expiry and burn-after-view behavior). You may delete notes you own where the product allows it. Contact us if you need help with account-related requests.
